Retroperitoneal (Renal/Aorta): Your doctor may order this test if there is a suspected kidney stone, kidney infection, abnormal kidney function, or blockage in the flow of urine from the kidney to the bladder. Ultrasound of the kidneys can also be used to better evaluate kidney findings seen on other studies or to follow up known kidney abnormalities.

Retroperitoneal ultrasound can also evaluate for an abdominal aortic aneurysm, or enlargement of the aorta, in those with risk factors for heart and vascular disease.
