Temporal Bone

Ordered in patients with hearing loss, vertigo, or ringing in the ears (tinnitus). The two main categories of hearing loss are conductive and sensorineural. For the former, CT is the modality of choice. This will nicely assess the ossicular chain, as well as other conductive abnormalities in the external and middle ear. CT is excellent at evaluating common complications of chronic middle ear infection/inflammation, such as cholesteatoma. Finally, CT can be used to detect congenital vascular abnormalities or middle ear masses that may be responsible for tinnitus.
