Often to investigate pelvic pain, CT can detect many infectious and inflammatory conditions in the pelvis, such as diverticulitis, colitis/proctitis, pelvic abscess, ruptured ovarian cysts, and stones in the ureters and bladder. Your doctor may also order this test to further evaluate masses felt in the pelvis or groin. CT of the pelvis is often combined with CT of the abdomen to get a more comprehensive evaluation of the internal organs. A specialized CT protocol can also be used to assess the bony pelvis in cases of pelvic trauma, pain related to inflammatory or degenerative disorders of the hip or sacroiliac joints, or to work-up findings detected on X-ray.
