MRI of the orbits is of great utility in evaluating various conditions of the eye and orbits. It is used in the workup of vision loss, especially if inflammation of the optic nerve is suspected, such as in the setting of multiple sclerosis. It is also used to evaluate known or suspected orbital masses, unexplained protrusion or bulging of the eyes, as well as complicated infections of the eyes and orbits, particularly in cases of advanced sinus infection. Orbital MRI is also sometimes used to evaluated the orbits after trauma.
