In the setting of trauma, MRI can detect occult fractures not detected by X-ray or even CT. Along the same lines, MRI can detect stress or insufficiency fractures, which are often completely invisible on other modalities. MRI of the pelvis is also used in the evaluation of degeneration and tears of the major tendons in the pelvis, abnormalities of the sciatic nerve, which can be responsible for some cases of sciatica, and degenerative and inflammatory arthritis in the hips and sacroiliac (SI) joints.
