How to Prepare for an Ultrasound

For all obstetrical (gestation) ultrasound exams

Pregnancy: 1 – 13 Weeks

Starting 1½ hours prior to your exam, drink 32 oz. of water within 30 minutes and hold your water.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT go to the bathroom until technologist finishes exam – please DO NOT empty bladder.

Pregnancy: 14+ Weeks

Starting 1½ hours prior to your exam, drink 24 oz. of water over the course of the first ½ hour and hold your water.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT go to the bathroom until technologist finishes exam – please DO NOT empty bladder.

For Pelvis Complete (Pelvic Transabdominal) or Pelvis Complete with Transvaginal (Pelvic Transvaginal) exams

Starting 1½ hours prior to your exam, drink 32 oz. of water over the course of the first ½ hour and hold your water.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT go to the bathroom until technologist finishes exam – please DO NOT empty bladder.

NOTE: You may EAT under both preparations.

For Bladder Exams

Starting 1½ hours prior to your exam, drink 32 oz. of water over the course of the first ½ hour and hold your water.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT go to the bathroom until technologist finishes exam – please DO NOT empty bladder.

For Abdomen, Gallbladder, or Retroperitoneal/Kidney Exams

Please DO NOT EAT OR DRINK for at least six (6) hours prior to your appointment.

For Arterial Abdomen/Pelvis Exams

Please DO NOT EAT OR DRINK for at least six (6) hours prior to your appointment.

For Renal Artery Duplex Exams

Please DO NOT EAT OR DRINK for at least six (6) hours prior to your appointment.
