How to Prepare for a Fluoroscopy

For all fluoroscopy exams, including: Esophagram, Upper GI, Small Bowel Series, Barium Enema, or I.V.P.

Please DO NOT EAT OR DRINK after midnight prior to your exam, you must be fasting.

Please DO NOT take your regular morning medications, you may bring them with you to your exam and your technologist will inform you when to take medication after your exam has been completed.

If you’re getting an I.V.P. (Intravenous Pyelogram)

Eat a light supper the evening before your exam and follow the above instructions.

As noted above DO NOT EAT OR DRINK after midnight; however, you should drink 16 oz. of water prior to your exam and 16 oz. of water after your exam to stay hydrated.

If you’re getting a Barium Enema

Purchase a 64 ounce bottle of Gatorade or other sports drink and Miralax.  If you have diabetes, buy a low sugar drink, for example Crystal Light.  This will be used to mix your Miralax the day before your test.  Do not use carbonated beverages.  Also purchase Dulcolax tabs (available at local pharmacy).

3 Days prior to the procedure: NO roughage (raw fruits or vegetables) or Fiber Foods (whole grain or fiber cereals). Cooked and canned fruits or vegetables are allowed.

Day Prior To Procedure: drink only clear liquids such as water, clear juice (apple, white cranberry or white grape), tea, seltzer, club soda, ginger ale, sprite, clear broth or bouillon.

1PM- Take 2 Dulcolax Tabs

3PM- Mix 7 doses of Miralax (119grams) in 32 Oz of Gatorade. Drink 8 ounces every 15 min

10PM: Take 2 Dulcolax Tabs

Do not drink or eat anything on the day of the exam.
